Tajikistan to Curb Smoking

A law outlawing smoking in public buildings comes into force in Tajikistan next year will. Some doubt the new rules will have much effect outside the capital Dushanbe, and think they may be abused by police.

Smoking in the wrong place or selling tobacco in unlicensed premises will carry fines of up to 2,000 US dollars, while selling cigarettes to minors will carry a 500-dollar penalty.

This audio programme, in Russian and Tajik, went out on national radio stations in Tajikistan, as part of IWPR project work funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
